Answer
Do I need a PC for VR?
Not anymore. Standalone headsets like the Meta Quest 3 run hundreds of full VR games and apps without a PC. A gaming PC unlocks higher-fidelity titles and PC-exclusive games, but is no longer required for an excellent VR experience.
Standalone (no PC needed)
- Meta Quest 3 / 3S
- Pico 4 Ultra (region-limited)
- PSVR 2 (needs PS5, not PC)
- Apple Vision Pro
PC VR (needs gaming PC)
- Valve Index
- HTC Vive Pro 2
- Bigscreen Beyond 2
- Pimax Crystal
What a PC unlocks
- Higher resolution and refresh rate
- PC-exclusive titles (Half-Life: Alyx, Microsoft Flight Simulator VR, Asgard's Wrath 2 PC)
- Mods and community content
- VR sim racing and flight sim
Recommended PC specs for VR
- GPU: RTX 4070 minimum, RTX 4080+ ideal
- CPU: Ryzen 7 or Core i7 of recent generation
- RAM: 32GB
- USB-C 3.2 port for wired link, or Wi-Fi 6E router for wireless
The hybrid path
Buy Quest 3, use standalone for now. Add a gaming PC later if you find yourself wanting more — Quest 3 doubles as a PC VR headset via Air Link.
