What is lens compression, and do long lenses really flatten faces?
Compression is a distance effect, not a lens effect. Long lenses make you stand further back, which shrinks the relative size difference between the nose and the ears, so the face looks flatter. Crop a wide shot to the same framing and you get the same perspective as the wide lens.
The physics in one paragraph
Perspective — the relative size of near and far objects — is determined only by where the camera is. Focal length determines how much of that perspective you capture. A 24mm shot cropped to match an 85mm frame has identical perspective to the 24mm original, just fewer pixels.
Why the myth persists
Because in practice, changing lenses changes where you stand. Photographers reach for an 85mm and automatically step back. The flattering result is credited to the lens.
How to use it deliberately
- Want a flatter, more graphic face? Move further away and use a longer lens: 135mm or 200mm.
- Want a sense of place and immediacy? Move closer with a 35mm and accept the exaggerated nearest features — it can be a style, not a mistake.
- Fixing an unflattering portrait? Step back first, then re-frame with focal length.
The background effect
Distance also governs how big the background looks. Standing far back with a long lens makes distant mountains or city lights loom large behind the subject — the classic compressed-portrait look.
