What is the VR sweet spot, and how does IPD affect it?
The sweet spot is the part of the lens where the image is actually in focus. It shrinks fast when the lens is not centred on your pupils, so setting interpupillary distance correctly matters more to perceived sharpness than panel resolution.
What the sweet spot is
Every headset lens resolves best on-axis. Move away from that axis and the image loses contrast and detail. The usable region is the sweet spot: large on pancake optics, small and central on Fresnel.
Why IPD is the lever
Interpupillary distance is the gap between your pupils, typically 54-72mm. If the lenses are set wider or narrower than your eyes, you are permanently looking off-axis and the sweet spot never lands where you are looking. The result reads as "blurry headset" even on a high-resolution panel.
How to get it right
- Measure your IPD — a mirror and a ruler is accurate enough, or a phone app.
- Prefer a headset with continuous hardware IPD adjustment over one with two or three fixed stops.
- Adjust while wearing it, on a scene with fine text, until the text is crisp with your eyes pointed straight ahead.
- Re-check after adding a facial interface, spacer or prescription inserts — they change the geometry.
When you cannot fix it
If your IPD falls outside the headset's range, software IPD only shifts the rendered image; it does not move the optics. Expect softness. Check the adjustment range before buying if your IPD is below ~58mm or above ~70mm.
