Do prescription inserts reduce field of view in VR?
Slightly, but far less than wearing glasses. Inserts add a thin lens in front of the headset optic, pushing your eye a millimetre or two back; glasses plus a spacer typically cost several millimetres and a visibly narrower view.
Why distance matters
Field of view is a function of how close your cornea sits to the headset lens. Every millimetre of extra distance crops the edges of the image. This is why the same headset measures differently between reviewers.

- Prescription inserts are thin, magnetically mounted, and sit inside the headset. Typical field of view cost: minimal, often not noticeable.
- Glasses plus spacer move the lens assembly away from your face to make room for frames. Typical cost: a visible reduction, plus scratch risk to the headset lenses and pressure points on your nose.
Other reasons inserts win
They keep the lens surface clean, they let anyone with a different prescription swap in their own set, and they avoid fogging trapped between two lens surfaces.
What to budget
Inserts from headset makers and third parties generally run in the range of a mid-priced pair of glasses. Treat it as part of the headset cost if you need correction — and check that your prescription (particularly strong astigmatism or high dioptres) is supported before ordering.
