Portrait lens advice usually stops at "get an 85mm f/1.8". That is a fine default and a bad explanation. Here is what each variable actually does, with deeper pages for each question.

Focal length changes the face, not just the framing

At a fixed head-and-shoulders crop, a shorter lens forces you closer, and proximity — not the lens — enlarges whatever is nearest the camera, usually the nose. Longer lenses let you stand back, which flattens those relationships and is what people mean by "compression".

  • 35mm — environmental portraits. Shows the room. Unflattering for tight headshots.
  • 50mm — the versatile middle. Natural on full frame at three-quarter length.
  • 85mm — the classic headshot length. Flattering proportions, comfortable working distance.
  • 135mm — strong subject separation and very flat rendering, but you need space.

Aperture buys separation, then costs you focus accuracy

Wider apertures blur backgrounds more and gather more light. They also shrink depth of field to the point where, at f/1.2 on a close headshot, one eye can be sharp and the other soft. Most working portrait photographers shoot fast primes at f/1.8-f/2.8 for that reason.

Is f/1.2 worth it over f/1.8?

Crop sensors change the numbers

On APS-C, multiply by roughly 1.5 (1.6 on Canon) for the equivalent framing: a 56mm becomes an 85mm-equivalent, and a 50mm behaves like a short 75mm. Depth of field also changes — an f/1.4 lens on APS-C gives background blur closer to f/2 on full frame at the same framing.

Bokeh quality is not the same as bokeh quantity

Two lenses can blur the background equally and look completely different. Aspherical elements can leave onion-ring textures, cheap designs produce nervous edges, and off-centre highlights become cat's-eye shapes as the lens body clips the light cone. Reviewers describe this as "rendering", and it is the main reason people pay for classic portrait primes.

Why bokeh looks different between lenses

Zoom or prime

A 70-200mm f/2.8 covers 85mm, 105mm and 135mm in one body and is the standard event and wedding tool. Primes are lighter, cheaper per stop, and give you f/1.4-f/1.8. If you shoot in one place with time to move, primes win. If the subject moves and you cannot, the zoom wins.

A sensible buying order

  1. An 85mm f/1.8 (or APS-C equivalent around 56mm) as the first dedicated portrait lens.
  2. A 35mm or 50mm for environmental and full-length work.
  3. A 135mm or 70-200mm only once you know you have the shooting distance to use it.

Do I need f/1.2 for portraits?

No. The depth of field at f/1.2 on a headshot is thin enough that missing an eye is common. Most portrait work happens between f/1.8 and f/2.8.

Does focal length distort faces?

The lens does not; your distance to the subject does. Short lenses force you close, which exaggerates the nearest features.
