Answer
Phone or dedicated camera — which should I buy?
If photography is a hobby or a job, buy a dedicated camera. If it is incidental — family moments, social media, travel snapshots — your phone is already enough. The middle ground is buying a great phone first, then adding a camera later for what the phone cannot do.
Buy a dedicated camera if
- You want to learn photography as a craft
- You shoot in low light frequently (concerts, events, indoors)
- You want shallow depth of field beyond portrait mode simulation
- You need true optical zoom past 5x
- You print larger than 8x10"
- You shoot fast action or sports
Stick with phone if
- Your output is primarily Instagram, TikTok, family group chats
- You travel light and a second device is friction
- You want one device for everything
- Budget is under $700 total
The hybrid
A current iPhone or Pixel for daily life + a used Sony A7 III or Fujifilm X-T4 for serious shoots = best of both worlds for under $2,000 total.
