Answer

Phone or dedicated camera — which should I buy?

If photography is a hobby or a job, buy a dedicated camera. If it is incidental — family moments, social media, travel snapshots — your phone is already enough. The middle ground is buying a great phone first, then adding a camera later for what the phone cannot do.

Buy a dedicated camera if

  • You want to learn photography as a craft
  • You shoot in low light frequently (concerts, events, indoors)
  • You want shallow depth of field beyond portrait mode simulation
  • You need true optical zoom past 5x
  • You print larger than 8x10"
  • You shoot fast action or sports

Stick with phone if

  • Your output is primarily Instagram, TikTok, family group chats
  • You travel light and a second device is friction
  • You want one device for everything
  • Budget is under $700 total

The hybrid

A current iPhone or Pixel for daily life + a used Sony A7 III or Fujifilm X-T4 for serious shoots = best of both worlds for under $2,000 total.
