Overview

The A7 IV is Sony's "do-everything" full-frame body. 33MP BSI sensor, 10-bit 4:2:2 internally, and the same AF brain that powers the A1 trickled down to a $2,500 price point.

Image quality

Dynamic range is excellent through ISO 6400 and usable through 12800. Skin tones are noticeably warmer than the A7 III — Sony finally fixed the green cast complaint.

Autofocus

Real-time tracking on humans, animals, and birds. In two weeks of shooting I missed maybe three frames out of 4,000. Eye AF locks instantly even through glasses or sunglasses.

Video

4K60 with a 1.5x crop, 4K30 oversampled from 7K and gorgeous. S-Cinetone gives you broadcast-ready color out of camera with no grading.

Verdict

If you want one body that handles weddings, video, wildlife, and travel without compromise, this is it.

What we love

  • Class-leading autofocus
  • Excellent 10-bit 4K
  • Fully articulating screen
  • Dual card slots (CFexpress + SD)

Where it falls short

  • 4K60 has a 1.5x crop
  • Menu system still busy
  • Battery life dips in heavy video use

FAQ

Is the A7 IV worth it over the A7 III?

Yes if you shoot video or need the better AF. Stills-only photographers on a budget can still get great results from a used A7 III.

Does it overheat?

Light overheating on 4K60 in hot weather after 40+ minutes. Not an issue for typical shoots.

Best lens to pair with it?

The Sony 24-105mm f/4 G is the most-recommended walk-around. For portraits, the 85mm f/1.8.
