Xiaomi 14 Ultra Camera Review: 1-Inch Sensor, Variable Aperture, Real Photography
Co-engineered with Leica, the 14 Ultra's 1-inch main sensor and stepless variable aperture deliver image quality that's genuinely closer to a compact camera than a phone.

Optics overview
50MP Type 1 (1-inch) main sensor with stepless variable aperture from f/1.63 to f/4.0 — a real mechanical iris, not a software simulation. Joined by a 50MP ultrawide (12mm, f/1.8), 50MP 3.2x telephoto (75mm, f/1.8), and 50MP 5x periscope (120mm, f/2.5). All four lenses are 50MP — pixel parity matters for unified processing.
Image quality
The 1-inch main sensor is the differentiator. Depth of field at f/1.63 is shallow enough to produce genuine optical bokeh, not the cutout-and-blur effect of computational portrait modes. Stop down to f/4.0 for landscape and you get edge-to-edge sharpness most phones can't touch.
Leica color profiles (Authentic and Vibrant) give you a choice between accurate and stylized — Authentic is the most film-like rendering of any phone. Highlight roll-off in particular feels analog.
Both telephoto cameras open to f/1.8 and f/2.5 — brighter than any competing flagship — and both have full OIS. Low-light telephoto is in a different class.
Video
8K30, 4K120, 10-bit Log, and the Pro mode in the Leica app exposes real video controls. Still slightly behind iPhone for stabilization but closer than any other Android.
Verdict
The enthusiast phone. If you understand aperture and you want to make photographic choices instead of letting software decide for you, nothing else comes close. Heavier than competitors and the global rollout is limited — confirm availability in your region before buying.
What we love
- ✓1-inch sensor, real shallow depth of field
- ✓Mechanical variable aperture f/1.63–f/4.0
- ✓Bright f/1.8 and f/2.5 telephotos
- ✓Leica color science is genuinely distinct
Where it falls short
- –Limited US availability
- –Heavy and camera-bump dominant
- –Software polish trails Samsung/Google
FAQ
Is the variable aperture mechanical or software?
Mechanical and stepless — a real iris diaphragm between f/1.63 and f/4.0. Aperture priority mode works like on a real camera.
Is it sold in the US?
Limited official availability. Importers stock it but you'll lose warranty and some carrier bands. Confirm 5G band compatibility before buying.
Is the Leica branding meaningful?
More than marketing. Color science, lens coatings, and the dual-profile system are genuine Leica input. It's not the same as shooting a Q3, but the rendering choices are clearly informed.
