Why mirrorless took over

No mirror means a shorter flange distance, which means smaller lenses and smaller bodies. It also means the AF sensor can read directly off the imaging sensor — which is why eye-detect autofocus on modern mirrorless feels like magic.

Battery life is the one area DSLRs still win, but that gap is narrowing every generation. For 95% of buyers in 2026, mirrorless is the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Is mirrorless better than DSLR?
For new buyers, yes. Smaller, better autofocus, vastly better video, and the lens ecosystems are now mature on every major mount.
Which mirrorless system has the best lenses?
Sony E-mount has the deepest third-party support (Sigma, Tamron). Fujifilm X has the best APS-C prime lineup. Canon RF and Nikon Z are catching up fast.
Are mirrorless cameras good for beginners?
Yes — the eye-detect autofocus alone removes one of the hardest parts of learning photography. Start with a kit zoom and a 35mm or 50mm prime.
