How to pick a travel camera

The best travel camera is the one you'll actually take out of the bag. That usually means under 600 g body+lens, a versatile zoom range, and weather sealing for the moment the weather turns.

We weigh and pack-test every body we recommend, and call out which lenses are realistic for a single carry-on.

Frequently asked questions

Is a full-frame camera too heavy for travel?
Not anymore. Bodies like the Sony a7C II, Sigma fp, and Panasonic S9 weigh under 600 g with a pancake prime — lighter than a kitted-out APS-C from five years ago.
Should I buy a superzoom for travel?
If you want one-bag, one-lens simplicity, yes — something like a 24-200mm. Image quality at the long end is a compromise, but it beats missing the shot.
Do I need a separate camera if I have a flagship phone?
For social and snapshots, no. For low light, telephoto, and prints over 8x10, a dedicated camera is still meaningfully better.
